Thanksgiving Weather Across Canada

The Weather Network says different parts of Canada could have very different weather for Thanksgiving weekend. If the weather goes on the way they expect, it could be cold on the Prairies and warm in the East. Southern Ontario could also be warm. Read more here.

Thanksgiving in Winnipeg -- What's Not Happening

There are two stories from Winnipeg -- about things that aren't happening.

First, the city is holding elections. It's not just one day. People can vote at City Hall anytime Mondays to Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., until Oct. 17. But there's no voting on Oct. 13th, Thanksgiving Day.  (There are also many other places to vote, with different hours.) Read more here.

Also, not enough people are giving blood. Accidents can often happen at holiday times. Canadian Blood Services would like to collect more blood. There are mobile clinics where you can give. Read about it here.

 

More About Wine with Thanksgiving Dinner

White wine is traditional with poultry like turkey. But some people feel red or rosé wines are better at Thanksgiving. In this article, wine writer David Lawrason says "I would go with reds to wade into the gravy, savoury dressing and especially the dark meat."

It's true many Thanksgiving foods have strong flavours. Red wine may be better for that reason.

A Drink for Thanksgiving Dinner

What are you going to drink with your turkey? This article says rosé wines are good for Thanksgiving -- or any time in the fall.

Here is more about Gordon Fraser, the only person in Pictou County, Nova Scotia, who kills turkeys. The government says Fraser can't do it again until he gets certified. People are angry that this happened just before Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving News Around Canada

Some small farmers in Nova Scotia may have no one to slaughter (kill and prepare) their turkeys for Thanksgiving. Gordon Fraser, a butcher, usually does it for them. But now he's been ordered to stop. Read about it here.

Giving at Thanksgiving

Many people in Canada are planning to help others at Thanksgiving. They want everyone to have a Thanksgiving dinner.

In the province of BC, food banks are collecting food for people who don't have enough money. In Campbell River, volunteers left empty bags at houses. Those who live there can fill up the bags with food, and the volunteers will pick them up.

In Pickering, Ontario, a food drive begins on October 3rd. Food bank workers there say 40% of the people they help are children.

In the capitol of Canada, the Ottawa Mission will serve a dinner on Thanksgiving Day. (The Mission is a Christian group that helps the poor and homeless.) They are cooking 2,500 pounds of turkey, and they still need more.

Share Thanksgiving

A group called Share Thanksgiving brings together people who are new to Canada and people who have lived here a long time. They eat Thanksgiving dinner together.

This happens in several cities. If you would like to take part, you need to sign up by Friday, September 26th.
