The government of Canada has declared April 9th Vimy Ridge Day. It celebrates an important victory for Canada in the First World War.
On April 9th, 1917, Canadian soldiers attacked Vimy Ridge in France. It is an area of high ground over a lower area. The low area had many mines and factories, which were being used by the German invaders.
No one had been able to capture Vimy Ridge, but the Canadians did. Their country felt more respected after that.
3,598 Canadian soldiers were killed in the battle.
