In many countries, April 1st is a day to play tricks on people. Children play tricks on their friends and teachers. Adults may leave fake phone messages. Newspapers and other media may run fake stories and photos.
On this day, people try to tell stories that others will believe -- for a short time. The stories have to sound almost real.
When someone's April 1st trick works, they say, "April Fool!"
