Patriot Day 2009

September 11^th is the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the U.S. in 2001. Its official name is Patriot Day. On this day, Americans take time to remember and honor those who died in the attacks.

 

This year, the President and many others went to a ceremony at the Pentagon (U.S. military headquarters). It was one of the places attacked in 2001. 184 people were killed. There is a memorial to them at the Pentagon.

 

From now on, people who were at the Pentagon during the attack will give talks to visitors at the memorial. Lisa Dolan, whose husband was killed in the attack, arranged this.

Remembering 911

U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan held a ceremony at Bagram Air Base on Tuesday. They remembered September 11th, 2001.

Several people made speeches. Sergeant Gregory J. Barbaccia was one. He was a high school student in New York on the day of the attacks.

Barbaccia said, "“The world that was behind me when I went into school that morning was gone forever, and the new one waiting for me that afternoon was wildly different."

Francis Scott Key wrote The Star-Spangled Banner, after watching American troops defend a fort.

Patriot Day

September 11th is Patriot Day in the U.S.

On this day in 2001, terrorists hijacked four planes. They flew two into the World Trade Center in New York. They flew another into the Pentagon, the U.S. military headquarters in Washington, DC. The fourth plane crashed into the ground. (Passengers on it fought back.)

In all, 2,974 people were killed.

On Patriot Day, Americans are asked to remember those who died.
