Thanksgiving is based on the harvest festivals of ancient times. In those times, people celebrated when the food was taken from the fields and stored for winter.
This became a custom in many places. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving Day an official holiday.
Food is an important part of Thanksgiving. Roast turkey is traditional. So is pumpkin pie. Many people who don't usually eat rich food will eat it on Thanksgiving. The holiday's slang name is "Turkey Day".
People sometimes wonder if Thanksgiving is a religious holiday. It was started to thank God for food and other good things. But it was started by the government, not by a church. People of different religions celebrate Thanksgiving.
Many people use the day to think about good things in their lives. They remember to be thankful for these things.
